Ah yes indeed. I remember this series but mainly the "Alpha" books which were pink and white and had a big "A" instead of the "B" for Beta. The answer books (which our teacher unwisely trusted us with) were tall and thin. Before these we used A.L Griffiths': "6 a Day" (and then 7 a Day, 8 a Day, etc...). This was in the late 60s and early 70s.
I was searching for some Tripods-type rip off series of books I read at junior school, but when I saw the Beta book my blood ran cold. I hated those books.
I remember using this as a child in the 1970s. I was originally on the Alpha book and felt proud to be 'promoted' to Beta. It was only 40 years later that I discovered it was actually a DEmotion!
As a teacher, these were still in use in the early 1980s.
Why do people have bad memories of these books. I have vague recollections of using beta maths books in the early 70's and though cannot remember enjoying them cannot remember hating them. Not aware moving from alpha to beta was a demotion. I seemed to have got a good grounding in maths to take me into secondary school where we used SMP books which were great until A level where I hit a wall mathematics wise.

ReplyDeleteWe were certainly still being taught from these in the 80's as well!
