Hi, Found you via a blog search for Gayway since I am about to post pics of some old Gayway posters on my bog (for sale in my shop). I am trying to date them. Any suggestions welcomed. I taught from late 60's and saw the books but not these posters so I think they might be quite old.
Hi...I certainly remember these around the early 70's and since most UK schools had low budgets they would have been a few years old by the time we got them. I good way of dating the books that I have found is searching for them on the ABE.co.uk book selling site.
does anyone remember the series of childrens books about a big red lorry and the pots and pans, i loved these books as a child, but cant find them anywhere
Lovely I was just telling my five year old daughter that my first book aged 5 had "the big red lorry went up the hill" on it's first page. I remembered something about pots and pans as well as the name of the series of books being 'The Gayway Series' all seemed reasonable
I will always remember the very first book i read "The big red lorry went up the hill, the pots and pans went up the hill" i would love to find a copy of this book again, i was 5 years old in1953.

“The big red lorry went up the hill. The pots and pans went up the hill in the lorry. Big pans, little pans, big pots and little pots. Red pans, tin pans, red pots and tin pots. Up and up to the top went the big red lorry. Up and up and up went the pots. Up went the pans.” Gay Way Red Book 1 or possibly the Big Lorry and Little Lorry Red Stories !
Hallo, I loved these books and devoured them avidly. I remember that I was ready to go on to the next coloured book as I read them so fast, so they gave me a half sized book of the same colour to to keep me going each time until the others in the class caught up with me. I was born in 1953 and could read newspapers at the age of 4 and a half, difficult words as well and knew their meaning. I attribute it all to these books.
I learned to read by these books, the harder they became, the books became a different colour. They used to give me a half sized book of the same colour with more to read as I devoured them so fast, which kept me going until the rest of the class caught up with me. I could read at the age of 4 and a half, especially newspaper stories. I owe it all to these books and would love to have a copy of the wording of each of them now. Phonetic reading is the way to teach.
OMG - me too I loved it. The very first book I can remember being given to read. What a sense of achievement it gave me. Utter delight - bring on the next book!

yes, Meg the Hen and tip the cat, there was even a pig who sat on the pot and crushed it because he was cross that he was not allowed in.!
Think I remember these books. Was there one with a pig, fox, hen and an old boot? X
