Goodbye Sheila

I was deeply saddened to read yesterday of the death of Sheila K. McCullagh MBE ( 3 December 1920 – 7 July 2014 ) . She was an author who touched the hearts of children growing up in the 60's, 70's 80's and 90's with numerous series of schoolbooks. Although never reaching the best sellers lists or Hollywood she created stories that held magic, mystery and in some cases pirates. Her stories although falling out of favour with the educators in the late 90's will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of the children that she taught and encouraged to read. Thank you Sheila for encouraging so many children to learn about the magic of stories and books.

The Obsession

When I first started this website/collection many years ago I had no idea of the impact it would have, I also had no idea that this type of literature (yes, dear reader, I class school reading books as literature) was in danger of slipping out of the memories of all of us!

I just would like to take a post to say THANK YOU to all of you who commented, reminded me and passed on information that has helped me to create this website.

The blog will continue, just as my search for these elusive gems of our childhood continues, let us just hope that the website is far more sturdy than my bookcases.

Another series by Sheila Mccullagh, this one was I think dated from 1969ish and yet again was on a nautical topic.

Breakthrough Reading Scheme

I've finally found them..the very first books I had at primary school. It was the Breakthrough reading scheme. They were published in 1970 by Longman (and I am just relieved to have finally found out what they were!)

Wide Range Readers Series

Yet another book that triggers a distant memory, the publishing age is about right as well. These were common place in the early 70's in schools. Some of you may remember the characters Lok and Shan.
